Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Relative Strength: Detailing Key RS Changes in October
Growth focused assets in one corner, value oriented names in the other. October's back and forth action brought lots of changes worth talking about. Today we remind readers of the RS basics as well as some of the more "art" than science to reading important changes as they occur in real time.
Morning Pulse
NDW Morning Pulse - October 29, 2026
- The Russell 2000 Index was up 0.41% over the past day, followed by the S&P 500 ([SPX]) at 0.28% and the Dow Jones Industrial average ([.DJIA]) at 0.19%
- With Healthcare holding the top spot in our DALI sector rankings, the sector continues to demonstrate strong relative strength across multiple time frames. Healthcare and Biotechnology both rank among the top five groups on the Asset Class Group Scores page, reflecting leadership on both a long-term and short-term basis.
- The ten week for the S&P 500 ([^TWSPX]) has continued to tick higher and now maintains a chart level of 60%, signaling a continual increase in near-term participation. Meanwhile, the percent positive for the S&P 500 ([^PTSPX]) still remains in a column of Os with a current chart level below 50%, demonstrating long-term weakness.
- On the earnings front, a few major companies are expected to report earnings over the next week: Apple Inc. ([AAPL] 5/5 TA Score on 11/02), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. ([AMD] 4/5 TA Score on 11/03), and AbbVie ([ABBV] 5/5 TA on 10/30).
- Yesterday’s research highlighted several key relative strength reversals that emerged in October, suggesting market leadership may be broadening beyond cap-weighted growth stocks. While growth remains the long-term leader, these shifts could signal an expanding opportunity set across other areas of the market.
Below are highlights from the NDW Morning Update Video for the morning of 10/28. Access the video on the NDW Morning Update Video page.
- It was a largely productive day for major markets on Tuesday. Growth focused areas took center stage, seeing the Nasdaq Composite (NASD), Russell 2000 (RUT) and emerging markets (EEM) all pick up over 1% for the session. Crude Oil (CL/) and long-duration treasuries (TLT) were the only names we typically look at that finished in the red.
- Alongside the strong performance day, participation picked up nicely… especially within those growth focused areas. ^BPNDX, which measures the percentage of the Nasdaq-100 trading on intermediate term buy signals, pushed higher to 50%. While still off 2026 participation highs, the slight resurgence in upside movers is undoubtedly a positive.
- There were several developments on the commodities front. Gold (GC/) moved back within earshot of 2026 lows after a false breakout on its default chart. Continue to avoid precious metals. Crude moved lower for the day but the path of least resistance remains higher for now. Resistance can be found between $103 and $110.
- With the weakness, precious metals continues to shed RS against other areas of the commodity space. A closely watched RS relationship between Copper CPER and GLD reversed back in favor of CPER. The industrial metal now earns both short- and long-term strength.
- Some large names report after close. MSFT is a 4/5’er (buy rating according to NDW’s technical attribute scoring system) and GOOGL is a 3/5’er heading into their respective calls. GOOGL has the more interesting technical picture of the two, as it trades off its highs and has retreated towards its bullish support line around $300.
Relative strength lies at the heart of nearly all Nasdaq Dorsey Wright strategies. Identifying those assets that are rising faster or falling slower (positive RS) and owning them over those areas that are rising slower or falling faster (negative RS) is the name of the game. Of course, there are different ways that you can choose these winning/losing assets, with some of them being more advantageous than others. One of the more prominent ways that the analyst team will home in on key RS matchups is through relative strength charts… charts which pit each member against each other to see who is stronger. These RS charts impact various areas of the platform (Fund Scores, Technical Attribute Scores, Matrix Rankings, etc.) so knowing how to read them is key. Today’s feature will detail some of the intricacies of relative strength chart analysis as well as discuss a handful of notable changes amidst market volatility over the last few weeks. For those of you who are already familiar with RS charts and their high-level calculations, feel free to skip ahead.
Relative Strength Charts: Back to the Basics
As mentioned previously, there are several different ways you can calculate relative strength (RS). For NDW, relative strength is a simple mathematical computation charted over time. Asset A divided by Asset B, multiplied by 100. For example, stock A-valued at $100- compared to stock B-valued at $50- would have an RS value of 200.
On its own, this value means nothing. You’ll never hear an NDW analyst say “the Apple to Microsoft RS reading is sitting at 63.8372 today… its time to buy!” What does matter, however, is how this value shifts over time. Going back to our example, if stock A were to rise to $150 while stock B stayed at $50, our quotient would now result in a value of 300 instead of our previously calculated 200. It is quite obvious which asset you would have rather owned. If this value decreases over time (say if stock B moved to a value of $75 while stock A stayed put at $100) then our RS reading would fall to 133.33, signaling outperformance from our denominator (stock B). Over time, plotting these changes in this simple RS calculation in a similar fashion to normal trend charts results in a picture we can take advantage of in security selection. It is easiest to think about assets that are moving up, but this same mathematical computation identifies stocks that are falling less during times of uncertainty.
RS Charts- October 2026 Changes
Not every RS chart is created equal. While it can be fun during down time around the office to peruse random comparisons, there are some that the analyst team will focus on as key indicators of strength. To give you an idea, some of the major relationships we will watch include:
- Sector vs. Cash (For example, XLK vs. MNYMKT), Sector Vs. Broad Index (XLP vs. SPX), Sector vs. Sector (XLP vs. XLY)
- Index vs. Index (SPX vs. SPXEWI), Index vs. Cash (SPX vs. MNYMKT)
- Asset Class Vs. Asset Class (SPX vs. ACWX, SPX vs. GLD)
- Factor vs factor (MTUM vs. SPLV), value vs. growth (VUG vs. VTV), etc.
While this is by no means an exhaustive list, it can provide some context to how many on the team keep track of different assets. Note, you can also observe different scales- with higher values requiring more movement. Just like trend charts, some scales “work” and some don’t. We will discuss this more in just a moment. Included below is a table of the different RS charts that flipped over the last few weeks, as well as who maintains both long- and short-term strength. Remember, in this table, movement “up” favors asset A, while movement “down” favors asset B.
While 3.25% and 6.5% are by far the most “frequent” scales used within our RS analysis, that isn’t to say they are aways the “right” scales when it comes to picking winners and losers. In fact, of the 10 RS charts in the table above, four of them don’t produce profitable RS Switching strategies (owning whichever asset sits on a long-term buy signal.) The point is finding scales that are consistent over time… just use these relative landmarks (3.25% & 6.5%) as starting points when finding said consistency. Some scales (take for instance, a lot of the 6.5% scales) are insensitive to the rapid movements markets can throw at us… leading to years of market movement without a change in signal. In some cases, a more sensitive 3-box reversal can provide more insight into what “works”. To help guide you, NDW includes these hypothetical strategies beneath each RS chart. Said portfolios are a frequent first stop for many of the analysts when judging the validity of a specific RS chart. Where to find them is included in the screenshot below.
It is very important to remind you that we aren’t in the business of simply making an RS chart work for the sake of it working. Just like a regular trend chart, you can get an RS relationship to tell you whatever you want it to. For some, a 0.25% scale might yield the best results but ultimately produce a change once a day, far too frequently for most to make trading decisions. For others, it might “work” simply because there hasn’t been a change in years. So much for active management! Some charts might have worked in 9/10 cases but appear to underperform over the long-run because of the one missed signal. Point is, be careful about simply taking any of these hypothetical portfolios as gospel. For many of the analysts, they are jumping off points for other inquiries. If we see a sector reversing down against the broad S&P 500, we might dive deeper into why that is rather than rushing to write an article about the reversal alone.
All in all, the main takeaway from October’s reversals is an emerging preference for some areas outside of cap-weighted growth assets. While many of these areas still maintain long-term strength, it will be worth watching how this changes-if it does at all- as we close out 2026.

NDW Spotlight Stock
CACI CACI International Inc. R ($658.03) - Computers - CACI is a 4 for 5'er that ranks in the top third of the computers sector matrix and has been on a market RS buy signal since 2015. After falling to a sell signal earlier this month, CACI rallied, returning to a buy signal with a double top break at $640. In this week's trading, the stock gave a second consecutive buy signal when it broke a spread quadruple top at $648. long exposure may be added in the $630s to $660s and we will set our initial stop at $568, which would take out two levels of support on CACI's default chart. We will use the bullish price objective, $776, as our target price.

CBRL Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. ($69.23) - Restaurants - CBRL broke a double top at $71 for a second buy signal as shares rallied to $72, marking the highest chart since July 2025. The stock improved to a 5 for 5'er after seeing the peer RS chart give an RS buy signal on 10/14, and CBRL currently ranks 2nd (out of 25) within the Restaurants sector matrix. Okay to consider on a pullback to the upper to mid $60s. Initial support lies at $65, while prior resistance at $60 may be seen as additional support.
CNX CNX Resources Corp ($38.09) - Oil - After giving two consecutive sell signals, CNX returned to a buy signal Wednesday when it broke a double top at $39. Wednesday's move adds to a modestly positive technical picture as CNX is a 3 for 5'er. From here, the next level of overhead resistance sits at $43, the multi-year high CNX reached earlier this year. Meanwhile, support can be found at $31.
CTVA Corteva Inc ($11.40) - Chemicals - CTVA fell to a sell signal Wednesday when it broke a quadruple bottom at $11.50, taking out support that had been in place since August. The outlook for the stock remains modestly positive as CTVA is an acceptable 3 for 5'er. But, the stock has recently shown signs of relative weakness as it reversed down on both its peer and market RS charts on Tuesday. From here, the next level of support is CTVA's bullish support line at $10.50.
ETSY Etsy Inc ($92.63) - Retailing - ETSY broke a double top at $92 to return to a buy signal as shares rallied to $94, marking the highest level since August 2023. The stock improved to a 5 for 5'er after seeing the market RS chart give an RS buy signal and the trend flip back to positive on the trend chart. Okay to consider on a pullback to the mid $80 to $90 range. Initial support lies at $84, while the bullish support line resides at $71.
GPOR Gulfport Energy Corp ($166.36) - Oil - GPOR gave a second consecutive buy signal and moved to a positive trend Wednesday when it broke a triple top at $170. The outlook for the stock remains negative, however, as even with the positive trend change GPOR is a unfavorable 2 for 5'er.
TMO Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. ($706.81) - Healthcare - TMO inched higher and completed a double top break at $704, marking its second consecutive signal and a new intraday all-time high above $710. The 5 for 5'er moved up from a 3 last month after reversing back into a buy signal against the market and reversing back into Xs against its peers. Additionally, the stock ranks in the top quintile of the healthcare sector matrix. Long exposure can be made here. Initial strong support is at $664, with additional support at $640.
