NDW Prospecting: Active vs. Passive Management in 3Q26 and Over the Long Term
As we typically do each quarter, today we revisit the debate between active and passive management by looking at how passive indices have fared across several different markets.
Morning Pulse
NDW Morning Pulse - October 29, 2026
- The Russell 2000 Index was up 0.41% over the past day, followed by the S&P 500 ([SPX]) at 0.28% and the Dow Jones Industrial average ([.DJIA]) at 0.19%
- With Healthcare holding the top spot in our DALI sector rankings, the sector continues to demonstrate strong relative strength across multiple time frames. Healthcare and Biotechnology both rank among the top five groups on the Asset Class Group Scores page, reflecting leadership on both a long-term and short-term basis.
- The ten week for the S&P 500 ([^TWSPX]) has continued to tick higher and now maintains a chart level of 60%, signaling a continual increase in near-term participation. Meanwhile, the percent positive for the S&P 500 ([^PTSPX]) still remains in a column of Os with a current chart level below 50%, demonstrating long-term weakness.
- On the earnings front, a few major companies are expected to report earnings over the next week: Apple Inc. ([AAPL] 5/5 TA Score on 11/02), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. ([AMD] 4/5 TA Score on 11/03), and AbbVie ([ABBV] 5/5 TA on 10/30).
- Yesterday’s research highlighted several key relative strength reversals that emerged in October, suggesting market leadership may be broadening beyond cap-weighted growth stocks. While growth remains the long-term leader, these shifts could signal an expanding opportunity set across other areas of the market.

- The ten week for the S&P 500 (^TWSPX) has continued to tick higher and now maintains a chart level of 60%, signaling a continual increase in near-term participation. That said, the near-term uptick hasn't had much of an effect on some of our longer term indicators quite yet, seeing the percent positive trend for the S&P 500 (^PTSPX) still sit just below 50%. Heading into November, we will look for this value to expand.
- On the earnings front, a few major companies are expected to report earnings over the next week: Apple Inc. (AAPL 5/5 TA Score on 11/02), Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD 4/5 TA Score on 11/03), and AbbVie (ABBV 5/5 TA on 10/30).

As we typically do each quarter, today we revisit the debate between active and passive management by looking at how passive indices have fared across several different markets – US large cap equity, US small cap equity, international developed equity, emerging market equity, and US fixed income – over both the short- and long-term.
This year has provided us with a good opportunity to evaluate active vs passive management as we experienced a geopolitical driven drawdown and subsequent recovery which active managers could have potentially positioned for. One of the arguments in favor of active management is that active managers will outperform in down markets.
The key determinant of which style, active or passive, is superior is market efficiency. Market efficiency describes the degree to which asset prices quickly and rationally adjust to reflect new information. In highly efficient markets, new information is quickly incorporated into prices, and therefore it is not possible to consistently achieve above-average risk-adjusted returns in these markets. Therefore, due to their lower cost, investors are better off utilizing passive strategies in highly efficient markets. In less efficient markets, on the other hand, the opportunity exists for skilled active managers to outperform passive strategies, thereby adding value for clients.
The active vs. passive debate often focuses on large-cap U.S. equities, which is a natural starting point for the discussion – the large-cap U.S. equity market is composed of the most well-known companies in the world and represents a large portion of many retirement portfolios. However, if we stop there, we ignore what should be an obvious and fundamental element of the discussion – the various markets around the globe are unlikely to all be equally efficient. The very fact that U.S. large-cap companies are the most visible and researched firms in the world suggests that the U.S. large-cap equity market is likely to be more efficient than its less well-known counterparts! It is because of the variation in efficiency that the merits of active versus passive management should be evaluated on a market-by-market basis.
On the surface, the debate between active and passive may seem academic. However, it has practical implications for advisors. Most importantly, you want to do what is in the best interest of your client. If your client is best served by using low-cost passive funds because active management truly doesn’t add value, then so be it. However, utilizing only passive funds eliminates one of your value propositions as an advisor – evaluating and selecting funds – and removes any possibility of outperformance, so, from a business perspective, it is probably preferable to keep at least some active management in the mix.
The tables below show the quarterly, year-to-date, and rolling five-year return rankings of several well-known indices (representing passive management). If the index ranks in the top two quartiles, then it outperformed most managers within the peer group during that period. Conversely, if the index ranks below the 50th percentile, then most active managers in that universe outperformed the benchmark. Looking at the rankings over time, we can get a feel for which markets are the most efficient, and thus are likely to favor passive management, and which are the least efficient, offering the greatest opportunity for active managers.
The earliest five-year period in our long-term rankings began in June 2017 and the most recent period ended September 30 2026. During that time, we have experienced several different market environments and market-shaping events from the calm of 2017 to the volatility of 2020 and the tariff-driven drawdown last year. So, we have a good cross-section of market states upon which to base our conclusions.
US Large Cap Equities
The S&P finished the third quarter in the second quartile of the rankings, where it also currently sits on a year-to-date basis. This is in-line with what we've seen over the long-term as the S&P has finished in above the 50th percentile in every rolling five-year period in our lookback window, suggesting a possible advantage for passive management in the US large cap space.

US Small Cap Equities
The Russell 2000 finished the third quarter right around the 50th percentile and sits just inside the second quartile on a year-to-date basis. While most active managers have underperformed the index this year, over the long-term it appears there may be an advantage for active management in small caps as the Russell 2000 has finished in the bottom half of the rankings in every rolling five-year period and has often ranked in the bottom quartile.

Developed International Equities
The MSCI EAFE Index sits right around the 50th percentile on both a quarter and year-to-date basis. This is similar to what we see over the long-term as the index has often finished just above or just below the mid-line in our longer-term rankings, providing no convincing evidence of an advantage to either active or passive management.

Emerging Market Equities
Like its developed market counterpart, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index sits right around the 50th percentile on both a quarterly and year-to-date basis. However, unlike international developed markets, the longer-term rankings for emerging markets show a possible bias towards active management as the index has finished in the bottom half of the rankings in every five-year period in our lookback window.

US Core Fixed Income
The Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index finished the third quarter above the 50th percentile, an unusually strong showing for the index. Over the long-term, however, the rankings show a clear advantage for active management in US core fixed income as the Agg has finished in the bottom quartile of the rankings in every five-year period in our lookback window.

NDW Spotlight Stock
EHC Encompass Health Corp. ($130.52) - Healthcare - EHC improved to a 4 for 5’er in technical attribute rating in mid-October this year after seeing the market RS chart return to a column of Xs, highlighting near-term outperformance. The stock has maintained positive long-term market RS since April 2025 and peer RS since April 2024, while currently ranking within the top half of the Healthcare sector matrix. On the trend chart, EHC has maintained a buy signal and positive trend since July this year, and recent trading brought about a fourth buy signal at $130 as shares rallied to $132, marking a new all-time chart high. Okay to consider here on the breakout or on a pullback toward the middle of the 10-week trading band at $122. The bullish price objective of $151 will serve as the price target, while the initial stop loss will be set for $108.

AMZN Amazon.com Inc. ($245.28) - Retailing - AMZN broke a double top at $244 to return to a sell signal. The break also brings AMZN down to test the bullish support line, which would be violated with a move below $236. The stock continues to maintain a 3 technical attribtue rating with positive long- and short-term peer RS. Beyond the bullish support line, additional support can be found at $228, the June and July chart lows.
CNR Core Natural Resources Inc. ($86.56) - Oil - CNR fell to a sell signal and a negative trend Thursday when it broke a double bottom at $87, where it now sits against support. The negative trend change will drop CNR to an unfavorable 2 for 5'er.
FTNT Fortinet Inc. ($139.10) - Software - Shares of FTNT fell sharply on Thursday, falling more than 20% to break a spread triple bottom at $166. Today's move saw the name lose near-term relative strength, bringing it down into hold territory as a 3 for 5'er. Additionally, the stock is right above the bullish support line at $126, so any movement lower would bring it down into a negative trend. That said, the stock is in heavily oversold territory, so those with positions should hold on for now.
GOOGL Alphabet Inc. Class A ($282.96) - Internet - GOOGL fell short following their earnings report... dropping nearly 13% for the day. This will bring the name back into a negative trend, now earning at best a 2 attribute score as we close out October. With that in mind, exposure should be limited as you are able. Many of you will have longstanding positions with a cost basis lower than current levels, making a pure "sell" call difficult to stomach here. Keep in mind, we should avoid making decisions based purely off the name of the stock... this breakdown is ugly and a similar breakdown for anyone other than the search engine giant would be cut heavily at best on bounces, or removed entirely at worst.
H Hyatt Hotels Corp. ($184.44) - Leisure - H broke a double top at $182 to complete a bullish catapult as shares rallied to $184, matching the August rally high. The stock improved to a 4 for 5'er after shifting back into a positive trend on the trend chart. H is actionable here on the breakout or on a pullback to the $170 range. Beyond current resistance, additional can be found in the lower $190s and at prior highs at $204. Initial support lies at $168, while the bullish support line sits at $160.
MRVL Marvell Technology Inc. ($215.99) - Semiconductors - Shares of MRVL broke a double bottom at $220 to move back to sell signal, falling more than 13%. That said, the stock will likely remain a 4 for 5'er for the time being, with it still trading a positive trend. That said, those with positions should continue to watch for signs of further weakness. From here, MRVL is right by support at the $216 level, with additional support at $204.
NOW Servicenow Inc ($109.27) - Software - Shares of NOW plummeted more than 25% on Thursday, breaking a double bottom at $140 for a sell signal. Today's move also saw it move back into a negative trend, in addition to losing some relative strength, placing it back in sell territory as a low attribute name. That said, the extreme movement today had put it into oversold territory, so investors should wait for reversal or consolidation before looking to sell. Initial support lies at $108 then $92.
RCL Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. ($311.85) - Leisure - RCL broke a double top at $312 for a third buy signal and to penetrate the bearish resistance line. The positive trend change will increase the stock up to a 3 for 5'er, which shows positive near-term market and peer RS. Note resistance at $332, the prior rally highs from June and August this year. Initial support lies at $296, while additional can be found at $276.
RL Ralph Lauren ($398.41) - Textiles/Apparel - RL broke a double top at $396 for a second buy signal since late-September as shares rallied up to $400, near prior chart highs. The stock is a 4 for 5'er that ranks 4th (out of 25) within the Textiles/Apparel sector matrix. Okay to consider on a pullback to the upper $370 to low $390 range. Note the stock's chart high at $416 from June this year. Initial support lies at $372, while the bullish support line resides at $340.
SUN Sunoco L.P. ($70.83) - Oil Service - SUN fell to a sell signal and a negative trend Thursday when it broke a double bottom at $71. The negative trend change will drop SUN to an unfavorable 2 for 5'er. From here, the next level of support sits at $70.
