Daily Summary

Morning Pulse

NDW Morning Pulse - September 2, 2026

  • Equity futures are about flat this morning after rebounding from overnight lows. Crude oil down 1.3% after a big up day on Tuesday that saw it gain more than 5%.
  • Equities were down across the board yesterday. The S&P 500 ([SPX]) was down 71 bps. Tech led to the downside as the Nasdaq-100 ([NDX]) fell 1.29% and the iShares Semiconductor ETF ([SOXX]) lost more than 2%.
  • International equities were also down as the iShares MSCI EAFE ETF ([EFA]) and the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF ([EEM]) were down 89 and 37 bps, respectively.
  • Yesterday’s move returned crude oil ([CL/]) to a buy signal on its default P&F chart as it broke a double top at $88 and continued higher to $90.
  • The 10-year US Treasury Yield Index ([TNX]) reached 4.8%, its highest level since January 2025. The fed futures market is now pricing in a 66% chance that the Fed will raise rates at its September meeting. This is a significant increase from a week ago when the market was pricing in only about a 36% chance of a hike at this meeting. Comments from Fed Chair Warsh affirming his commitment to controlling inflation have helped fuel expectations for higher rates.
  • Yesterday’s research focused on uncertainty in small caps in the face of rising rates. Small caps are typically one of the most rate-sensitive segments of the market as higher borrowing costs can be especially difficult for smaller companies to shoulder.
  • Broadcom ([AVGO]) is to set to report earnings today after the close. AVGO is currently a 3 for 5’er and sits on a buy signal after breaking a double top at $376 last week. From here, AVGO’s chart shows support at $352, but beyond level no further support is seen on its default chart until $292. While AVGO’s trend chart does not look particularly strong currently, the long-term relative strength picture remains decidedly positive as AVGO has been on a market RS buy signal since 2014 and a peer RS buy signal since 2010.

Extra, Extra, Read All About It! Communication services is at its lowest position within the NDW DALI Sector rankings in nearly two years. Sitting in 7th, the sector has struggled mightily so far in 2026, lagging several other areas of the investable universe. Down almost 6% so far this year, XLC has underperformed the broad market (SPX) by nearly 18%. With the lack of upside action, XLC has dropped significantly in fund score, now scoring at a sub-optimal 2.60 fund score as of 9/1. The fund has scored below NDW’s technically acceptable 3.0 fund score since late May, and its overall technical posture has become increasingly difficult to defend even as other risk-on areas of the market continue to march forward.

Speaking of other areas of the market, many of you will closely associate the communication services sector with technology. After all, the comm services sector at large was a spinoff of technology starting in 2018, bringing media giants over into their own group and taking some market weighting out of the technology sector. Side note: the introduction of the communication services sector brought technology’s weight in the S&P 500 down to ~20% after claims that the market had become too reliant on the sector. The current weight of technology within the S&P 500 today sits at nearly double that- is it time for a “semiconductors” sector?

Jokes about market concentration aside, it certainly isn’t “wrong” to lump together technology and communication services together. After all, the two seem to generally  move in tandem. The chart below shows the rolling six-month performance spread between representatives XLK & XLC since mid-2000. On average, the six-month performance spread sits at just 1.52% (1.43% median) favoring XLK. Over the last six months, this spread has ballooned to nearly 38%, which would equate to a 99.7th percentile move. While it goes without saying that an elevated spread doesn’t necessarily mean one group is due to accelerate/slow down, it does help contextualize the dispersion in returns.

Underneath the hood of the sector, there are plenty of household names that would be part of anyone’s “buy what you know” portfolio. Perhaps the largest non-pure-tech-focused of the bunch would be Disney, which has been quite interesting to follow over the last few years.  Like clockwork, DIS has strung together failed breakout after failed breakout as upward action has been quickly beaten down by bears. After breaking back into a positive trend to open August, another failed breakout here could send Mickey Mouse back towards 2026 lows at $93. Keep a close eye on reversals for those of you who might be willing to open short/bearish positions to take advantage of the 1/5’er’s rangebound movement.

More tech-oriented META has struggled so far in 2026, earning a lousy 0/5 technical attribute rating as it continues to flirt with 2026 lows. While bulls have been quick to defend the $525 mark, META has put in a string of lower highs (and failed breakouts for that matter) since its highs last August. It looks to be forming a sort of triangle pattern on its default chart, with landmarks on either side of current levels ranging from 2026 lows at $528 and a slew of resistance from $592 to the bearish resistance line at $640. For now, the path of least resistance looks to be lower. Even highflier Alphabet (GOOGL), (GOOG) looks to have slowed down. While still positive for the year, it trades well off highs and the all-time highs from May seem a ways away. Now only a 3/5’er, the TA scoring system would suggest we hold off on adding any new allocation for now.

Remember, you can certainly find strong technical pictures across any given sector... even weakening ones. That said, it may be slightly more difficult to do so, and the penalty for being “wrong” may be more intense than in those areas that sector tailwinds are on your side. Regardless, keep an eye on the charts to help you decipher price action as it emerges within your portfolio.

Market Distribution Table The Distribution Report below places Major Market ETFs and Indices into a bell curve style table based upon their current location on their 10-week trading band.

The middle of the bell curve represents areas of the market that are "normally" distributed, with the far right being 100% overbought on a weekly distribution and the far left being 100% oversold on a weekly distribution.

The weekly distribution ranges are calculated at the end of each week, while the placement within that range will fluctuate during the week. In addition to information regarding the statistical distribution of these market indexes, a symbol that is in UPPER CASE indicates that the RS chart is on a Buy Signal. If the symbol is dark Green then the stock is on a Point & Figure buy signal, and if the symbol is bright Red then it is on a Point & Figure sell signal.

NDW Spotlight Stock

APO Apollo Global Management Inc. R ($132.90) - Wall Street - APO is a 4 for 5'er and member of the Wall Street sector that has been on peer and market RS buy signals since 2018 and 2019, respectively. On its default chart, APO gave a second consecutive buy signal last month when it completed a bullish catapult at $136 and continued higher to $144, taking out resistance that had been in place since February. The stock has subsequently pulled back to support at $130, offering an entry point for long exposure. Positions may be added in the $130s and we will set our initial stop at $114, which would take out multiple levels of support on APO's chart, We will use the bullish price objective, $168, giving us a reward-to-risk ratio approaching 2.0. APO also carries a 1.65% yield.

CBRE CBRE Group, Inc. ($141.87) - Real Estate - CBRE fell Wednesday to break a double bottom at $142. This also moved the stock to a negative trend and demotes it to a 2 for 5 TA rating. The technical picture is now weak and deteriorating. Further support can be seen from $136 to $130. Overhead resistance is seen initially at $156.
CVX Chevron Corporation ($212.57) - Oil - CVX gave a second consecutive buy signal Wednesday, when it completed a bullish catapult at $212, matching the all-time chart high it reached in March. Wednesday's move adds to a modestly positive technical picture as CVX is a 3 for 5'er; it has also pushed CVX even further into heavily overbought territory as it now has a weekly OBOS reading north of 100%.
DDOG Datadog Inc Class A ($209.23) - Software - Share of DDOG broke a double bottom at $216 for its third consecutive sell signal while also violating support from June. The 3 for 5'er lost near term market relative strength in June, placing it in hold territory for time being. Those with positions should hold on for now but should watch for further weakness. Initial support lies at $194 while previous resistance at $200 could serve as support too.
DELL Dell Technologies Inc Class C ($494.69) - Computers - Shares of DELL rocketed 15% higher after reporting strong earnings, moving back to a buy signal on $480. The 5 for 5'er has been rangebound over the last couple month but remains an extremely high relative strength name to own. From here, initial support lies at $424 then $360.
DG Dollar General Corp. ($133.13) - Retailing - DG broke a double top at $134 for a fifth buy signal since June. This follows the trend flipping back to positive, which increased the stock up to a 3 for 5'er. DG also shows positive long-term RS against the market and its peer group, while currently ranking within the top half of the Retailing sector matrix. Okay to consider here on the breakout or on a pullback to the upper to mid $120 range. Initial support support lies at $122, while additional can be found in the $114 to $118 range.
FMC FMC Corporation ($13.30) - Chemicals - FMC gave an initial buy signal Wednesday when it broke a double top at $12. The outlook for the stock remains decidedly negative, however, as FMC is a 0 for 5'er that ranks in the bottom half of the chemicals sector matrix. From here, the first level of support sits at $10, while FMC faces overhead resistance at $16.
GM General Motors ($84.98) - Autos and Parts - GM reversed into Os and broke a double bottom at $84 for a second sell signal since peaking in the lower $90s in July. The move for the current 4 for 5'er brings the chart down to test the bullish support line, which would be violated with a move below $83. Beyond current support, additional may be found at $79 and $75.
JNJ Johnson & Johnson ($275.70) - Drugs - JNJ reversed back up and completed a double top break at $280, marking its seventh consecutive buy signal and a new all-time high. The 3 for 5'er ranks in the top third of the drugs sector matrix. JNJ is still rated a hold, so continue waiting for further technical improvement before considering. Initial support is at $264, with additional support at $252.
NET Cloudflare Inc Class A ($271.16) - Internet - Shares of Net fell around 5% on Wednesday, moving back into a negative trend for the first time since April of this year. That said, the now 4 for 5'er continues to display relative strength, keeping it in buy territory for the time being. From here, initial support lies at $252 then $240.
ORLY O'Reilly Automotive, Inc. ($86.92) - Autos and Parts - ORLY broke a double bottom at $87 to end a series of buy signals that began in back half of July. The move also violates the bullish support line, which will drop the stock down to a 2 for 5'er. Support lies at current levels, while multiple other levels can be found in the mid $80s down to $83.
PANW Palo Alto Networks Inc ($326.51) - Software - Shares of PANW fell around 10% on Wednesday after earnings to move back to a sell signal. That said, the 5 for 5'er continues to look very strong, holding its peer and market relative strength while trading in a positive trend. Investors should continue to hold but should watch for further weakness. From here, initial support lies at $312 while previous resistance at $300 could serve as support too.
TMUS T-Mobile US Inc. ($186.86) - Telephone - TMUS breaks back into a positive trend with today's action. With the move, it will earn its third technical attribute, suggesting it is now at least "technically defendable" by the book. With that said, there is still a barrage of resistance above current levels, and there are certainly more attractive 3/5'ers out there. With that said- hold off on TMUS for now.
VAL Valaris Ltd. ($92.00) - Oil Service - VAL returned to a buy signal Wednesday when it broke a double top at $92. The outlook for the stock remains unfavorable, however, as VAL is a 1 for 5'er that ranks near the bottom of the oil service sector matrix. From here, the first level of support sits at $84.
