There is a change to the First Trust Thematic Focus Five Model (Total Return) this week as it is removing QCLN and adding FBT.

There is a change to the First Trust Thematic Focus Five Model (Total Return) this week as it is removing the First Trust Nasdaq Clean Edge Green Energy Index Fund (QCLN.TR) for falling below the sell threshold within the model’s total return relative strength matrix. In its place, the model is adding the First Trust NYSE Arca Biotechnology Index Fund (FBT.TR), which is the highest ranked fund within the total return relative strength matrix not already owned.

On both the price and total return trend charts, FBT has maintained a buy signal and positive trend for 12 months or more, and recent action has witnessed both charts move to new all-time chart highs. The fund also has sustained an acceptable fund score north of 3.0 since September last year and currently possesses a strong 5.79 fund score (out of 6).

With the change, the Thematic Focus Five Model will rebalance the five holdings to equally weighted at 20%, and maintain exposure to the Indxx NextG (NXTG), Smart Grid Infrastructure (GRID), Cybersecurity (CIBR), Future Vehicles & Technology (CARZ), and Biotechnology (FBT). Year-to-date, the Thematic Model has gained more than 12% on a total return basis, outpacing the S&P 500 (Total Return) (TR.SPXX) by 2.5% (thru 7/7).
